About
Discount stockbroker that introduced flat-fee equity trading to India, becoming the country's largest retail broker by active clients. Notably bootstrapped, having taken no external funding.
Nithin Kamath traded through his teens and worked a night shift at a call centre to fund it, before launching Zerodha with his brother Nikhil on Indian Independence Day in 2010. The name joins zero with the Sanskrit rodha, barrier. Its flat fee per trade broke with the percentage-brokerage norm and pulled in a generation of first-time traders, and the company built its own platforms — Kite for trading, Coin for direct mutual funds, and the free education portal Varsity. It has taken no external funding, and its Rainmatter arm backs fintech and climate startups.
