Nikhil Kamath is a co-founder of Zerodha, the Bengaluru stockbroker he started with his elder brother Nithin in 2010, where he is listed as chief financial officer. Zerodha brought discount broking to India, charging a low fixed commission instead of a percentage of each trade, and has grown without outside investors. Born in Shimoga in 1986 and raised in Bengaluru, Kamath left school after Class 10 and has no formal degree. He worked at a call centre while trading equities, and in 2006 became a sub-broker, setting up Kamath & Associates with Nithin to manage portfolios for wealthy clients. Beyond Zerodha, he co-founded the asset manager True Beacon in 2020 and the investment firm Gruhas with Abhijeet Pai in 2021. Since March 2024 he has hosted the interview podcast 'WTF is', and in April 2024 he launched WTFund, which gives grants to founders aged 25 and under without taking equity. In 2023 he signed the Giving Pledge, becoming its youngest Indian signatory according to Forbes.
Kamath's investing extends well beyond his own firms. Through Gruhas, which runs a consumer-brands fund and an Earth Fund set up with Brigade Group, he backs early and growth-stage startups in areas such as climate, consumer brands and proptech. Personally he has invested in companies including Licious and Ather. His podcast has hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bill Gates and Elon Musk among others. In December 2025 he and Kishore Biyani launched The Foundery, a 90-day residential programme in Alibaug for founders building investment-ready companies.
