A Delhi College of Engineering graduate from a small town in Uttar Pradesh, he taught himself to code and founded One97 Communications in 2000 as a mobile content and value-added services business, nearly losing it during the dotcom downturn. He launched Paytm in 2010 as a recharge platform, and its wallet became a household product after the 2016 demonetisation. He took the company public in November 2021 and has led it through the regulatory restrictions placed on Paytm Payments Bank in 2024.
