Shiv Nadar is the founder of the HCL Group and the Shiv Nadar Foundation, and is chairman emeritus and strategic advisor to the board of HCLTech, the Noida-based IT services company. Born on 14 July 1945 in Moolaipozhi, in present-day Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, he studied electrical engineering at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, graduating in 1967. He began his career at Cooper Engineering in Pune before setting out with a group of colleagues including Ajai Chowdhry and Arjun Malhotra. Their first venture, Microcomp, sold teledigital calculators; in 1976 the team founded Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL), which went on to build some of India's first indigenous computers. HCL Technologies began as HCL's R&D division and was spun off in 1991 as a software and services company, the business that became HCLTech. In 2020 he handed the HCLTech chair to his daughter Roshni Nadar Malhotra, and in July 2021 he stepped down as managing director. Since the mid-1990s he has focused on education, founding SSN College of Engineering in Chennai in 1996 and later Shiv Nadar University. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2008.
