Binny Bansal co-founded Flipkart, the Bengaluru e-commerce company, and now backs and builds companies through his investment firm 3State Ventures, including the Singapore-based cross-border commerce firm OppDoor. He grew up in Chandigarh, attended St. Anne's Convent School and graduated in computer science and engineering from IIT Delhi. He worked at Sarnoff Corporation, where he developed a lane-departure sensor for cars, and joined Amazon as a software engineer in January 2007 before leaving nine months later. In October 2007 he and Sachin Bansal, a fellow IIT Delhi graduate from Chandigarh, started Flipkart from a two-bedroom flat in Koramangala, selling books online. He served as chief operating officer until January 2016, then as CEO, and became Flipkart Group CEO in January 2017. Walmart bought a controlling 77% stake in 2018. Bansal resigned as group CEO on 13 November 2018 after an allegation of serious personal misconduct; Walmart said its investigation did not corroborate the complainant's claims but found lapses in judgement. He left Flipkart's board on 28 January 2024 and sold his remaining stake to Walmart.
After Flipkart, Bansal set up xto10x, which advises companies on scaling, and became an anchor investor in the venture firm 021 Capital. In 2019 he committed ₹125 crore to IIT Delhi's endowment fund. His privately funded firm, 3State Ventures, invests in commerce, logistics, fintech, healthcare and education. OppDoor, registered in Singapore and earlier named Three State Ventures Pte Ltd, surfaced in January 2024 as his second e-commerce venture; it runs overseas marketplace operations for consumer brands entering markets such as the US, UK, Europe, Japan and Australia. Filings reported in January 2026 showed 3State Ventures had put $14.35 million into OppDoor, including a fresh $6.4 million. In 2016 Time magazine listed him and Sachin Bansal among its 100 most influential people. He lives in Singapore.
