About
Arokiaswamy Velumani is the founder of Thyrocare Technologies, the Navi Mumbai-based diagnostics chain, and an investor whose family office led Simple Energy's ₹1,750 crore Series C in September 2026. Born in 1959 to a landless farming family in Appanaickenpatti Pudur near Coimbatore, he earned a BSc from Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College in Coimbatore in 1978 and began work as a shift chemist at Gemini Capsules. When that company shut, he joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai as a laboratory assistant and stayed 14 years, completing a master's degree in 1985 and a doctorate in thyroid biochemistry from the University of Mumbai in 1995. He set up Thyrocare in 1996 with a first laboratory in Byculla, using franchisees to collect samples for a central lab, and widened it from thyroid tests to preventive health check-ups. Thyrocare listed on the stock exchanges in April 2016. In June 2021 PharmEasy's parent, API Holdings, agreed to buy a 66.1% stake from Velumani and his affiliates for about ₹4,546 crore, and he took a small minority stake in API. He also founded Nueclear Healthcare, a radiology diagnostics company.
Under Velumani, Thyrocare grew into a network of more than 1,000 outlets across India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Middle East, and its 2016 initial public offering was subscribed nearly 73 times over. After selling control of the company, he has backed other businesses. YourStory's September 2026 coverage describes him as the creator of Thyrocare, AVMLabs and AVMSmiles. His family office led Simple Energy's ₹250 crore round in June 2026 and then its ₹1,750 crore Series C three months later. Commenting on that round, he pointed to Simple Energy's in-house technology for the chassis, battery, motor and software as rare among Indian EV makers.
