Grainhouse is the rare Indian supply-chain business that reached scale before it reached a term sheet. Its founder explains why that was a deliberate choice, not a lack of options.

Rajeshwar Pillai does not enjoy interviews, which is part of why Grainhouse is under-covered relative to its size.

The company now moves produce across seven states. For the first six years it did so on supplier credit and retained earnings.

"Capital solves a growth problem," Pillai said. "We had a trust problem. Those are not the same and money does not fix the second one."
