Gharbar, which rents beds, mattresses, almirahs and appliances to students in North Delhi, has raised pre-seed funding through the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, AlloyX Ventures and angel investors, with SBI as debt partner. It plans to expand across Delhi-NCR.
Gharbar, a Delhi startup that rents furniture and household appliances to students living away from home, has raised a pre-seed round. Support came through the government's Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), AlloyX Ventures and other early-stage angel investors, with State Bank of India as a debt partner. The amount was not disclosed. The news was published on 1 October 2026.
The company is run by brothers Rahul Chandra and Shashi Chandra and has been incubated at DTU-IIF and at Udhmodya Foundation.
What Gharbar does
Gharbar's model is what it calls Basic Amenities on Rent, or B.A.R. Instead of buying furniture and appliances they may only need for a few years, students rent them, with delivery, setup and maintenance included.
It began with four products: a bed, a mattress, an almirah and a water purifier. The range has since grown to 15 SKUs across furniture and everyday appliances. The company is also building its own furniture manufacturing, focused on standardised, durable and modular designs that can survive repeated rentals.
Gharbar has served more than 1,500 students across North Delhi and is preparing to expand across Delhi-NCR.
On its website, Gharbar pitches the service at students moving into PGs and hostels, promising delivery within 24 hours and the option to return items when they leave, so they need not spend lakhs on furniture.
The founders
Rahul and Shashi Chandra grew up in a small town in Bihar and left home in 2012. They say more than a decade of living away from family showed them a gap in student living: premium options for those who can pay more, and compromises for everyone else, with little in between focused on affordable essentials.
A principal at AlloyX Ventures said the firm was drawn to the founders' first-hand understanding of the problem and their asset-backed model built around affordability, convenience and repeat usage.
