Senapathy 'Kris' Gopalakrishnan is one of the seven co-founders of Infosys and chairman of Axilor Ventures, a startup accelerator. Born in Thiruvananthapuram on 5 April 1955, he earned an M.Sc. in physics in 1977 and an M.Tech in computer science in 1979, both from IIT Madras, and started his career that year as a software engineer at Patni Computer Systems in Mumbai, and in 1981 was among the founders of Infosys. At Infosys he rose to chief operating officer and took over as CEO and managing director from Nandan Nilekani in 2007, serving until 2011, and was then vice chairman until 2014. He was president of the Confederation of Indian Industry for 2013-14 and a co-chair of the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2014. Since leaving Infosys he has focused on startups and research: he backs early-stage companies through Axilor, funds brain and ageing research through his family's Pratiksha Trust, including a Centre for Brain Research at IISc, and chairs the IISc council and the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2011.
