About
Kunal Shah is the founder of CRED, the fintech company that rewards members for paying credit-card bills, and since June 2026 has led WhatsApp at Meta. Born on 30 May 1979, he studied philosophy at Wilson College in Mumbai, started working in his teens and later left a part-time MBA at NMIMS in 2004. In 2009 he started PaisaBack, a cashback promotions business, and in 2010 co-founded FreeCharge with Sandeep Tandon, an online recharge service he has described as a pivot of that model. Snapdeal bought FreeCharge in April 2015 in a cash-and-stock deal reported at about ₹2,800 crore. Shah founded CRED in 2018. On 22 June 2026 Meta named him head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart, and led a $900 million investment in CRED that valued the company at about $4.5 billion post-money. Shah stepped down as CRED's chief executive while keeping his shareholding, and Miten Sampat, who had overseen strategy and finance since 2020, became interim CEO. He is also one of India's most active angel investors, with stakes in more than 250 companies.
CRED had 17 million monthly active users at the time of the Meta deal, according to TechCrunch. Its valuation peaked at $6.4 billion in 2022 and was about $3.6 billion after a May 2025 round; before the Meta-led Series F it had raised more than $1 billion. CRED's board said it was working on a longer-term management structure as it prepares for an eventual IPO, with the new capital going to payments, lending, insurance and wealth products. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited Shah's 'builder mentality and global perspective' in announcing the appointment. Earlier recognition includes Fortune India's 40 Under 40 in 2016 and The Economic Times Startup Awards' 'Comeback Kid of the Year' the same year for FreeCharge.
